Welcome to Azure Waters,

The Shark Bay area of Western Australia has an amazing selection of attractions to interest and excite tourists and visitors.  Located in the mid-west region of Western Australia the Shark Bay area encompasses more than 2000kms of unspoilt coastline to explore and enjoy. Shark Bay is the most Western point of Australia. The bays of Shark Bay are protected from the Indian Ocean by Dirk Hartog Island, whales and whale sharks traverse this area during the migration season.  Dirk Hartog Island is the location of the first landing of Europeans in Australia and evidence of this can still be seen at Inscription Point on the Northern end of the island.

Shark Bay was named by an English Explorer, William Dampier, on his second voyage to Australia in 1699.  It appears he believed that the area had an abundance of sharks, although he probably mistook the dolphins for sharks, as this area is home to the world famous Monkey Mia dolphins.  Shark Bay is well known for its large seagrass banks and these provide a food source for the local Dugong population which makes up to 10% of the worlds total Dudong population.

In 1991 the Shark Bay World Heritage area was created and was the only World Heritage area in Western Australia at the time and today is still one of only a handful of places in the world that satisfy all four criteria for heritage listing - one of the most remarkable places on earth.

Denham is the only town in the area and is completely surrounded by the World Heritage listed area providing a unique enclave for the townsite.  Facilities in the town include Primary and High School, medical services, supermarkets, hardware, car hire, scenic flight hire, restaurants and cafes, Bowling Club, Golf Course, Tourist accommodation and a Discovery Centre.

The town has beautiful, safe pristine beaches and cruises to the nearby islands are available for charter for fishing, diving, snorkeling or just for a relaxing day and then a short distance away by vehicle are the amazing wild dolphins of Monkey Mia, the Hamelin Pool Stromatolites, Shell Beach, the Zuytdorp Cliffs, Steep Point and South passage which is home to world class fishing.

Farmer Wants a Wife - The Shark Bay area was recently featured on the television program "Farmer Wants a Wife" and this program featured a local pearl farmer, Jamie Morgan and highlighted some of the incredible landscapes and scenic beauty of the area.

Pearl Farming - The Shark Bay area has had a long history of pearl farming and historic manuscripts about the area talk of the main street being paved with pearl shell.  Pearling is still an active industry in the area to this day.

The Shark Bay area boasts fantastic weather almost year round with the best time to visit being March to October when the weather in the South of the state can be cold and wet, the Shark Bay area basks in sunshine and 20-30 degree days.  It is the first destination North of Perth where you can be almost guaranteed of good weather during Perth's winter and only a comfortable one day drive from Perth through farming country and some of the most beautiful wildflowers in Australia or if you would rather fly a two and a half hour flight from Perth to Denham.
